Meeting Notes for 13 December

Present: Senem, Joel, Mark, Sudha, Marge, Ken, Adam, Shane

quarknet.org

  • Joel notes the importance of updating and rebooting i2u2-quarknet regularly. Senem doesn't think a late-night reboot will do anything negative to the site.
    • We can pull email addresses from the database to form a mailing list to alert users to downtime, similar to the list for CR e-Lab users. We're not sure how we'd keep that updated, though.
    • Senem will see if there's a way to gently logout users who are logged in during a reboot.
    • Joel will update/upgrade/reboot i2u2-quarknet this Friday at midnight when we deploy code to production
  • Senem's working through remaining website tasks. She'll deliver documentation when she's done.
  • Sudha notes that to put all Friday Flyers in a single group, we'll need to bulk-reset the audience field. She'll email Senem about it.
  • Dave Trapp has had a problem using the site that Ken thinks is due to the site logo obscuring some menu tabs in certain browser configurations. Sudha will email Dave for info on his browser and look into whether shifting the tabs to prevent the problem could be a quick fix. Otherwise, you can usually scroll up to see the tabs (Deborah had the same problem, according to Ken).

CMS

  • Tom has reservations about whether CERN Open Data will meet its target date for releasing 2012 data tomorrow, but everyone involved is working hard on it, so it should at least be quite soon.
  • H to 4l analysis example will be included in release with 11 events in the signal region. Tom has a list of events in the full mass histogram range (50-200 GeV?) but has not extracted all the events yet.
  • Tom has produced event display files and a csv file for candidate events from the 2012 dataset that pass selections and are in the 120-130 GeV range (https://cms-docdb.cern.ch/cgi-bin/PublicDocDB/ShowDocument?docid=13424).

Cosmic

  • Sudha has Δt code ready to test
  • Mark reports that the muon g-2 experiment that several of the fellows and some people at Brookhaven are doing can use the system Sudha built for Eclipse analysis using e-Lab data, though we may need a few tweaks like including secondary hits. More sophisticated approaches might use Jupyter Notebooks like Adam's.
  • Ken is planning a latitude-dependence study of muon flux with some people in Chile. They'll need to correct for altitude/pressure effects. Mark explains that the pressure correction is part of the 'blessing' procedure for e-Lab data, but extracting it requires looking at the intermediate files created by the analysis. Ken and Mark will continue discussion about how best to do this separately.
  • MIT has developed a Cosmic Watch $100 CRD that's been in the news. Mark notes that there's been little demand for this kind of smaller, SiPM-based CRDs from our user base, though he's prepared to go that direction if there ever is. Shane notes that adoption of such a device could be used to encourage more standardized CR data formats. Ken will include mention of it in this week's Friday Flyer.
